Just watched the improvs and jotted down my gut reactions.
NOTES
1. turn off auto focus,
2. line on the background screen (crease) not fabulous (maybe we should consider another solution?)
3. IDEA -- score in 2 parts - underlying line (freq info) this is what we have already spoke about
- another level - amount of deviation/repetition/the performance tendency for each of us within a section (for instance: minute 3 dancer enters, find a good place and repetitive action, 2nd level sound deviates and returns, dancer leaves) -- little things like this where sound and movement are interrelated, sort of a series of interactions will be the second layer of the counterpoint -- can refine and pull out ones we like)
4. light needs to be flat and even.
5. will add individual points without the filtered versions of sound. I discussed this briefly, now I have a clear idea. Again, this will be a secondary layer on the main line score.
6. yeah, can see when you look at the computer screen to see where you are. Fine in this context, but something to be aware of going forward. Question - what are you interacting with? shadow? sound? this could change over time... opportunity for compositional parameter.
7. predominantly enter from left side, should consider right side (and design of the piece)
8. costume? This was obviously an improv, but I did start thinking about how your hair acts as a wonderful extension, almost an instrument of your body, the costume could function like this or could evolve to over the course of the piece to function. POSSIBILITY SKETCH : The beginning is is very tight in terms of sound and boundaries and costume. movements are more angular, stiff. As the piece progresses the exertion loosens your hair(this already happens), and the tightness of clothing so that boundaries are more fluid. The sound boundaries and density becomes more complex to mirror this evolution. Eventually a significant event is costume evolution is visually apparent (I have the notion of clothing blooming like a flower - revealing constitution of the costume - multiple layers/types of cloth - maybe even prosthetic extensions of your body...) The dance device, ie body, has a new shape, now the dancer has evolved to occupy a new space and new interactions with the sound because of extensions (quite literally I have hair extensions in mind, but as a metaphore... maybe a thousand tails in all directions, creating complex movements in space and visual space, where the dancer controls the core motion, but physics controls the resolution). This could be considered one of the plateas of the piece.
At the end of watching this, I realized that there is some really good stuff in there and what we need to do is rehearse a lot. I think right now there are so many possibilities and the secondary levels, directions that we take the piece, will depend on what we can repeat and what we like.
For the grant, we should be very particular about the visual look of what we film. Post processing is time consuming and we can make a very clean and fabulous image up front, which I think will make editing a lot easier.
REHEARSAL IDEA.
1. I will have several scores created. Each about 10 minutes. (the shorter the better, but at this stage we need to time to explore things, so 10 minutes should be a good length) -- our improvs were about 20 minutes
2. We can try an aesthetic in different sections of the score. (section one - tight angular, section two flowing from right to left etc....) . These directions of motion are more likely to fall into your area of expertise. Come up a with a series of 10 or so things to try. Reworking/refining a bunch of these within the context of the score, we will quickly identify things we like.
3. Relationships across media. What is sketch above in IDEA - movement becomes repetitive and sound goes away and back. Obviously this is only one example (easily inevitable) I am sure we will discover others.
I like the idea of more free improv as it is really the best way to learn, expand and refine.
Proposal for Wednesday rehearsal.
1. try out several scores
2. try out sections of scores
3. review material on camera (gives us a break)
4. Improv
I think several sessions like this might put us in a really great position.
